WERNER KITZMÜLLER
Evasion (valeot 012 CD)

On his first album "Evasion," Werner Kitzmüller succeeds at creating unusual singer/songwriter pop in a somewhat "classical" orchestration. His baritone voice carries these melancholy, at times self-mocking, but always very personal songs upon a cloud of piano, cello, and guitar melodies. The lyrics, both in German and English, are gripping in their balanced simplicity and honesty, never crossing the line into overwrought displays of pathos but just telling it like it is -- as we do when we say this is one of the best singer/songwriter records of recent years, and a perfect record for the joys and woes of autumn.
